The Quintessential Experience of Kanniya Hot Springs
The Seven Wells of Ravana: Kanniya Hot Springs
steeped in mythology and geological wonder, the Kanniya Hot Springs consist of seven square-shaped wells, each containing water of a slightly different temperature. According to Hindu mythology, these springs were created by King Ravana during his mother's funeral rites. Legend says that failing to find water, he struck the earth seven times with his sword, and hot water gushed out. Beyond the legends, archaeological evidence including an ancient Stupa mound points to the site being used by Buddhist monks as far back as the Anuradhapura period.
Therapeutic Waters and Local Traditions
The water in the wells is believed to have various therapeutic and healing properties due to its unique mineral content. The ritual involves drawing water from the wells using plastic buckets and pouring it over oneself. The temperatures range from warm to quite hot (around 42°C). It is a fascinating experience to witness the local families engaging in this ancient wellness ritual, which is often seen as a spiritual cleansing as much as a physical one.
Heritage and Etiquette
The site is now an archaeologically protected monument. To preserve the purity of the springs, the use of soaps or shower gels is strictly prohibited within the well area. For HBS Tours guests, we recommend an early morning visit to avoid the midday heat and the larger crowds of pilgrims. The walk to the springs is lined with local stalls selling regional sweets and herbal products, providing a glimpse into the rural life of the Eastern Province.
