The Quintessential Experience of Vatadage
Vatadage: The Circular Guardian of the Dhamma
The **Vatadage** is perhaps the most iconic and visually stunning building in the Polonnaruwa Quadrangle (Dalada Maluawa). Historically attributed to both King Parakramabahu I and King Nissanka Malla, this circular relic house was once used to protect a small stupa that contained sacred relics. Its architecture is a perfect harmony of stone and space, representing the absolute peak of the medieval "Vatadage" style in Sri Lanka.
Symphony in Stone Carvings
The Vatadage is famous for having one of the most beautiful moonstones (*Sandakada Pahana*) and guard stones (*Muragala*) in the country. The structure consists of two circular terraces, with the upper terrace featuring four seated Buddha statues facing the cardinal directions. Every inch of the stone stairways and the surrounding railings is covered in delicate carvings of dwarfs (*Ganas*), lions, and vines, showcasing the incredible artistic sensitivity of the era.
Sacred Architecture with HBS Tours
Exploring the Quadrangle with **HBS Tours** gives you a front-row seat to the historical drama of Polonnaruwa. We explain the transition from the Anuradhapura style to the more ornate Polonnaruwa style that is so evident in the Vatadage. Walking through the stone pillars, you can almost imagine the golden-roofed structure as it stood 800 years ago, protecting the Tooth Relic of the Buddha.
Activities for History Buffs
The Quadrangle complex contains over a dozen structures, with the Vatadage at its center. We recommend taking time to study the moonstone at the northern entrance—it's widely considered a masterpiece. For photography, the symmetry of the four Buddhas sitting in eternal peace against the circular brickwork of the stupa provides a timeless and powerful composition. Remember to maintain silence as this remains a highly sacred area.
