The Quintessential Experience of Moon Plains
Moon Plains: The Rebirth of a Wilderness
Moon Plains (Sanda Thanna) is one of Nuwara Eliya's most successful conservation stories. For decades, this massive rolling plateau was a government potato farm and a waste management site. In 2014, it was painstakingly restored and opened as an Agricultural Economic Zone and Eco-Tourism park. Today, the scars of farming have been replaced by a vast, windswept grassland that feels more like the Scottish Highlands than a tropical island.
The 'Points of View' Pinnacle
The highlight of the Moon Plains is the observation deck at its highest point. On a rare clear day, you can see 'The Big Nine'—nine of Sri Lanka's tallest mountain peaks in a single 360-degree sweep, including Piduruthalagala, Kirigalpotta, and Sri Pada (Adam's Peak). The drop-off at the end of the plateau is so dramatic it is often called the 'Mini World's End of Nuwara Eliya'.
Leopards in the Highland Grasslands
Since its restoration, wildlife has returned to the Moon Plains in surprising numbers. It is now one of the best places in the central highlands to spot the elusive Sri Lankan Leopard hunting in the open grasslands. Large herds of Samba deer are a common sight, as are wild boars and various endemic eagles that use the thermals along the cliffs to soar across the plains.
The Jeep Safari Experience
Unlike other parks in Nuwara Eliya, Moon Plains is best explored via a guided jeep safari. The 4x4 track winds through the rolling hills, providing an exhilarating sense of vastness. The intense wind, the rolling mists that can swallow the plains in seconds, and the sharp, clean mountain air make it a highly sensory adventure that stands in contrast to the manicured gardens of the town.

- Sunset Wildlife Safaris: Late afternoon trips when the Samba deer are most active and the chances of a leopard sighting are highest.
- Panoramic Photography Sessions: Guided stops at the best ridge points for capturing the scale of the central mountain range.
Travel Logistics: Accessing the Plateau
Moon Plains is located about 6 km from Nuwara Eliya town centre, near the Seetha Eliya area. Access is primarily via hired 4x4 jeeps available at the park entrance. The park is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting before 10:00 AM for the highest chance of mountain visibility. Wear warm clothes and a windbreaker, as the plateau is exceptionally windy and significantly colder than the town.
