The Quintessential Experience of Buduruwagala Rock Carvings
Buduruwagala: The Rock of Buddhist Sculpture
**Buduruwagala** is an ancient Buddhist temple that dates back to the 10th century. The name literally translates to "the rock of Buddhist sculptures." Located near Wellawaya, the site is famous for its seven colossal figures carved in high relief on a massive cliff face. These statues belong to the Mahayana school of Buddhism, providing a rare glimpse into a period when Mahayana influences were prominent in Sri Lanka.
The Giant Buddha and His Attendants
At the center of the rock face stands the majestic Buddha statue, reaching a height of 16 meters (51 feet). It still bears traces of its original orange stucco robe. To the left and right of the central figure are two groups of three statues. The figures include Avalokitesvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion), Maitreya (the future Buddha), and Vajrapani. The fine details, from the folds of the garments to the serene facial expressions, demonstrate the incredible craftsmanship of ancient Sinhalese artisans.
Ancient Artistry with HBS Tours
At **HBS Tours**, we consider Buduruwagala a hidden treasure of the Uva province. It is far less crowded than the ruins of Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa, allowing for a quiet and contemplative visit. Our guides highlight the symbolic meaning behind each of the seven statues and the significance of the mysterious 'flame' or oil patch on the rock that remains wet even during the hottest droughts. The approach to the temple through scenic paddy fields and a small lake adds to the peaceful ambiance.
Visitor Activities
A visit to Buduruwagala is ideal for photography, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight hits the rock face at an angle, highlighting the depth of the carvings. We recommend spending time observing the diverse expressions on the attendant statues. The surrounding forest area is also a great spot for bird watching. It's a perfect detour for those traveling between the hill country and the southern national parks.
