The Quintessential Experience of Weurukannala Buduraja Temple
Weurukannala: The Colossus of Dikwella
The Weurukannala Buduraja Vihara is a temple of epic proportions. Dating back to the time of King Rajadhi Rajasinha in the 18th century, it is most famous today for its modern addition: a massive, 50-meter (160 feet) tall seated Buddha statue. This towering figure is the tallest seated Buddha in Sri Lanka and is visible for miles across the surrounding coconut plantations of Dikwella.
The Architecture of the Gigantic
The temple is designed in three parts. The oldest section features traditional Kandyan-style monk quarters and a small stupa. The second part is dominated by the giant Buddha statue, which guests can actually 'climb'—a series of internal stairs leads up to the level of the Buddha’s head, providing spectacular views of the Southern interior.
The Path of Karma: The Hell Murals
One of the most unique and thought-provoking features of the temple is the 'Hell Tunnel'. This long corridor is lined with life-sized, vividly painted sculptures and murals depicting the various 'Hells' of Buddhist cosmology. It serves as a visual lesson on the consequences of negative actions (Karma), leading eventually to the peaceful, upper sanctuary of the Buddha—symbolizing the journey of the soul toward enlightenment.
Coconuts and Sacred Space
The temple is set within a beautiful grove of coconut palms, which provides a natural serenity that contrasts with the dramatic and educational murals inside. The cool breeze through the palms makes the climb to the top of the Buddha statue a pleasant experience even in the heat of the afternoon.

The temple is located in Dikwella, about 20 km east of Matara. It is open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Modest dress is essential. The climb to the top of the statue involves many steps and can be narrow in sections; we recommend it for those with moderate fitness.
