The Quintessential Experience of Star Fort Matara

Star Fort: A Colonial Architectural Marvel

The Star Fort in Matara is a remarkable vestige of the Dutch colonial era in Sri Lanka. Completed in 1765 by the Dutch Governor Baron van Eck, its unique six-pointed star shape was a strategic design aimed at defending the city from inland attacks by the forces of the Kingdom of Kandy. It stands as the last major defense work built by the Dutch Oversight India Company (VOC) in Sri Lanka.

Strategic Design and Solid Defense

The fort is surrounded by a deep moat that was once home to crocodiles, serving as an additional layer of security. Its walls are made of thick granite and coral, designed to withstand heavy artillery fire. The central courtyard features a well that provided a reliable water source during sieges, and the ramparts were equipped with cannons that could cover all angles of approach.

A Portal to the Past

Today, the Star Fort has been beautifully preserved and serves as the Archaeological Museum of Matara. Within its rooms, visitors can explore a fascinating collection of artifacts, including ancient coins, colonial furniture, weaponry, and traditional crafts that tell the story of the region’s diverse cultural history.

The Governor's Crest

One of the most impressive features is the main entrance gate, which still bears the VOC (Dutch East India Company) insignia and the coat of arms of Governor van Eck, dating back to 1765. The fort's compact size and unique geometry make it one of the most Instagram-worthy historical sites in the Southern Province.
