Polhena: The Coral Bay of Matara

Polhena Beach is a local favorite and one of the best-kept secrets of the southern coast. What makes it unique is a massive, natural coral reef that runs parallel to the shore, acting as a giant breakwater. This creates a large, calm 'swimming pool' with almost no current, making it perhaps the safest place in Sri Lanka to swim in the ocean year-round.

Swimming with the Sea Turtles

The calm, shallow waters of Polhena are a famous sanctuary for Greens and Olive Ridley sea turtles. Because the bay is so protected, these gentle giants are frequently seen grazing on the sea-grass beds just a few meters from the shore. It is one of the few places in the world where you can snorkel with turtles in waist-deep water, making it a dream destination for families and naturalist photographers.

Coral Gardens and Coastal Life

The reef itself is a vibrant ecosystem. Beyond the turtles, snorkelers can encounter colorful parrotfish, triggerfish, and various species of rays. Travel Logistics: Planning the Perfect Day

Polhena is located only 2 km from Matara city center. While the beach is beautiful year-round, the water is at its clearest from December to April. We recommend visiting in the early morning to enjoy the calmest waters and have the best chance of spotting turtles. Rentals for snorkeling gear are available on the beach, but we provide sanitized, high-quality equipment for our guests.
