< p > The Baobab tree(Adansonia digitata) is a native of Africa, and its presence in Mannar is a fascinating historical footnote. It is widely believed that Arab traders brought these trees to Sri Lanka over 700 years ago to feed their camels, as the fruit and leaves have high nutritional value. The most famous specimen in Mannar is a botanical giant, with a trunk circumference of nearly 20 meters, making it look like a group of trees fused into one massive, elephant - like form.Locally, it is often referred to as 'Ali Gaha' (Elephant Tree) due to its grey, wrinkled bark that resembles elephant skin.
Biological Marvel of the Dry Zone
Baobabs are known as the "Tree of Life" in Africa because of their ability to store thousands of liters of water in their trunks to survive the dry seasons. In Mannar, these trees have adapted perfectly to the arid climate of the northern coast. During the dry months, the tree drops its leaves to conserve moisture, giving it its iconic "upside-down" appearance. When it blooms, it produces large, white flowers that open at night and are pollinated by bats.
