The Quintessential Experience of Udawattakele Sanctuary

Uda Wasala Watta: The Forbidden Forest of Kings

The Udawattakele Sanctuary, sprawling over 104 hectares behind the Royal Palace, is one of the most historically significant forest reserves in the world. Known in the era of the Kandyan Kingdom as Uda Wasala Watta (the garden above the royal palace), this lush woodland was once the exclusive pleasure garden of the Kandyan monarchs. Public access was strictly forbidden on pain of death, as it served not only as a royal retreat but also as a vital strategic defense, providing a natural fortress and an escape route for the royal family during times of invasion.

Ancient Hermitages and Royal Legends

Hidden within the dense canopy are several sites of deep religious and historical importance. The Senkanda Cave is believed to have been the dwelling of a Brahmin hermit named Senkanda, whose name eventually gave rise to the city’s original name, Senkadagalapura. The sanctuary also houses three Buddhist forest monasteries and several rock shelters that have been occupied by meditating monks for centuries. The Royal Pond, a serene water body located deep within the forest, is said to have been used by the King and Queen for bathing, protected from the eyes of the common folk by the towering giants of the forest.

A Biodiversity Hotspot in the City Heart

Udawattakele is a rare anomaly—a pristine rainforest located just steps away from a bustling city center. It acts as the "green lung" of Kandy, filtering the urban air and providing a sanctuary for a staggering array of wildlife. The forest is characterized by its massive Gian Lianas (Entada rheedii), some centuries old, which wind through the canopy like petrified snakes. It is also home to the Ironwood (Sri Lanka’s national tree) and the rare Mahogany, creating a multi-layered canopy that provides deep shadow even at noon.

The Avian Concert: A Birdwatcher's Paradise

For bird enthusiasts, the sanctuary is nothing short of legendary. Over 80 species of birds have been recorded here, including endemics like the Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, the Yellow-fronted Barbet, and the Crimson-fronted Barbet. The air is often filled with the calls of the Hill Myna and the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot. Mammals also roam the undergrowth, with Toque Macaques, Barking Deer, and the elusive Golden Palm Civet often spotted by patient observers who venture onto the quieter trails.

Nature Immersion with HBS Tours

We provide a curated nature experience that focuses on the ecological secrets and the quiet solitude of the royal gardens:

  • Sunrise Birding Expedition: We arrange for expert naturalists to guide you through the forest at 7:00 AM, the peak time for avian activity, identifying the rare calls and sightings that most visitors miss.
  • Royal Escape Trail: A historical hike that takes you from the palace gates, past the Senkanda Cave, and to the highest point of the forest, explaining the strategic defensive role of the sanctuary.
  • Meditation & Mindful Walking: For those seeking peace, we offer guided silent walks along the 'Lady Horton's Drive,' focusing on the sensory experience of the primary forest.

Travel Logistics: Entering the High Forest

The main entrance to Udawattakele is located on the western slope behind the Temple of the Tooth. Kandy can be reached via a 3.5-hour drive from Colombo. The sanctuary is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Leach Warning: During the rainy season, leeches are common on the forest floor; we recommend wearing long trousers and applying Sidhalepa (a local herbal balm) to your footwear. The forest trails range from easy strolls to moderate climbs; please ensure you carry adequate water as there are no facilities inside the deep forest.
