The Quintessential Experience of Royal Botanical Gardens
Peradeniya: The Emerald Crown of the Hill Country
The Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya, is arguably the most beautiful and historically significant botanical garden in Asia. Spanning a massive 147 acres (60 hectares), it is bordered on three sides by a loop of the Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka. Its origins date back to 1371 during the reign of King Wickramabahu III, but it was formally established as a botanical garden by the British in 1821. Today, it serves as a global center for tropical plant conservation, housing over 4,000 species of flora, including an world-renowned collection of orchids, spices, and medicinal plants.
The Royal Legacy: From Palace to Plantation
Before the arrival of the British, the grounds were used as a royal pleasure garden for the Kandyan kings and queens. During the 19th century, the gardens played a critical role in the island's economic history; it was here that the first tea plants (Camellia sinensis) were cultivated before the boom of the 1870s. During World War II, the gardens took on a different legendary role as the supreme headquarters of the South East Asia Command under Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, who directed the Allied campaign from this lush sanctuary.
The Living Wonders: Giants, Orchids, and Avenues
One of the most iconic highlights is the Giant Javan Fig Tree (Ficus benjamina), which covers a staggering 1,600 square meters. Its branches spread out like a massive green umbrella, held up by ancient, gnarled roots. Another must-see is the Orchid House, which features over 300 varieties of rare and exotic orchids, some of which are endemic to Sri Lanka and bloom in a kaleidoscope of colors and forms.
Memorial Trees and Palm Avenues
History buffs will appreciate the Memorial Trees section, where famous world figures have planted trees to commemorate their visits. Notable examples include a 'Cannonball' tree planted by King George V and Queen Mary in 1901, and a Yellow Trumpet tree planted by Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space. The gardens are also famous for their majestic Palm Avenues, particularly the Royal Palm Avenue and the Cook's Pine Avenue, where the trees lean at a curious angle as if bowing to the river.
