The Quintessential Experience of Kandy Lake

Kiri Muhuda: The Shimmering Sea of Milk

In the heart of the hill capital lies Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda (The Sea of Milk). This stunning artificial lake is not just a scenic centerpiece but a poignant symbol of the last days of the Kandyan Kingdom. It was created in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the final monarch of Sri Lanka, who transformed a stretch of paddy fields into this majestic water body to enhance the beauty of the sacred Temple of the Tooth. Today, it remains the city's most beloved landmark, providing a tranquil contrast to the bustling markets and traffic of the city center.

The Legend of the Island and the Hidden Tunnels

The lake is shrouded in romantic and dark legends. At its center lies a small island known as Diyathilaka Mandapaya. Folklore suggests that the King used this island as a private summer house for his harem, connecting it to the Royal Palace via a secret underwater tunnel. During the British colonial period, the island took on a more utilitarian role, being used to store ammunition. The iconic Walakulu Bamma (Clouds Wall) which encircles the lake was built to resemble moving clouds; however, it remains unfinished to this day, as the construction was abruptly halted when the British invaded and captured the city in 1815.

Nature's Sanctuary in the Urban Core

Despite its central location, Kandy Lake is a thriving ecosystem. As you walk along the 3.4-kilometer perimeter, you are likely to encounter a variety of wildlife. The lake is home to massive Asian Water Monitors, some reaching over two meters in length, which can often be seen basking on the stone banks. The surrounding ancient trees serve as nesting grounds for Pelicans, Cormorants, and Egrets, while the occasional Toque Macaque can be spotted swinging through the branches of the bo-trees that line the water's edge.

The Ulpange and the Queens' Bathing House

On the northern shore, standing partially in the water, is the Ulpange, a beautiful white pavilion that originally served as the bathing house for the Kandyan queens and concubines. Its architecture, with its arched windows and proximity to the palace, is a testament to the refined lifestyle of the Kandyan royalty. After the British conquest, it was used as an office and a library, and it now stands as a protected monument that glows spectacularly during the sunset hours.

Lakeside Reflections with HBS Tours

We believe the best way to experience Kandy Lake is through a slow, sensory journey that captures its historical essence:

  • Guided Sunset Circumnavigation: Join our local narrators for a 45-minute walk around the lake at dusk. They will point out the specific markings on the Walakulu Bamma and share the tales of the last King's resistance.
  • Boating on the Sea of Milk: We arrange for traditional boat rides that take you close to the central island and the Ulpange, offering a unique perspective of the Temple of the Tooth from the water.
  • Wildlife Photography: For birdwatchers and photographers, we provide specialized morning walks focused on capturing the predatory birds and monitors that are most active before the city wakes up.

Travel Logistics: Walking the Water's Edge

Kandy Lake is effectively the center of the city and is accessible on foot from almost any downtown hotel. The perimeter path is well-maintained and perfect for morning jogs or evening strolls. Important Note: While the lake is open 24 hours, fishing is strictly prohibited as the waters are considered sacred due to their proximity to the Maligawa. We recommend avoiding walking alone in the darker, more secluded sections of the path late at night. The walk takes approximately 1 hour at a leisurely pace.
