The Quintessential Experience of Richmond Castle
Richmond Castle: A Monument to Love and Ambition
Richmond Castle is not a medieval fortress, but a grand Edwardian-style mansion that tells a story of immense wealth, global ambition, and ultimate heartbreak. Built between 1896 and 1910, it was the country seat of Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena, a high-ranking official under the British administration. Educated in Britain, Siriwardena sought to replicate the grandeur he saw in Europe within his own island home, resulting in a palace that remains one of the finest architectural gems in Sri Lanka.
Architectural Espionage: The Maharaja's Influence
Legend has it that Siriwardena was inspired by the palace of the Maharaja of Ramnad in India. When the Maharaja refused to share the architectural plans, Siriwardena reportedly sent a team of architects to secretly sketch and measure the palace during various visits. The resulting mansion is a breathtaking blend of European Edwardian aesthetics with subtle Eastern flourishes, featuring 16 rooms, 99 doors, and 34 windows—a numerical symphony of design.
Global Craftsmanship: A World Under One Roof
The castle is a museum of early 20th-century global trade. The floor tiles were imported from Italy, the iron stairs and bathroom fittings from England, and the window panes from Scotland. Most remarkably, the double-winged grand staircase and the ballroom floor are crafted from solid Burmese Teak, intricately carved by local masters. The ballroom also features a pioneer natural "air conditioning" system—a series of tunnels that channeled cool air from the nearby Kalu Ganga into the floorboards.
The Tragic Legacy
Despite its opulence, the castle witnessed deep personal sorrow. Siriwardena and his wife, Clarice, never had children, which eventually led to the breakdown of their marriage. The grounds are scattered with statues of children, a poignant reminder of the Mudaliyar's unfulfilled dream of a family. Upon his death, he left his entire fortune and the castle itself to the Public Trustee to be used as a home for orphaned children—a mission that continues in part to this day.

Travel Logistics: The Hilltop Mansion
Richmond Castle is situated on a small hill just a few kilometers from Kalutara town. It is open to the public from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. While the exterior and main ballroom are the highlights, the gardens offer a peaceful escape from the humid plains. We recommend visiting during the morning hours to avoid the heat. Comfortable walking shoes are advised for exploring the sprawling grounds.
