The Quintessential Experience of Nagadeepa Purana Vihara
Nagadeepa: An Island of Peace
Nagadeepa Purana Vihara is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Located on the island of Nainativu, off the coast of the Jaffna Peninsula, it is identified as the place Lord Buddha visited during his second visit to the island. According to the Great Chronicle (Mahavamsa), he arrived here to settled a dispute between two Naga kings, Mahodara and Chulodara, over a gem-studded throne.
A Convergence of Faiths
The island of Nainativu is unique because it is home to both the Nagadeepa Buddhist temple and the Nagapooshani Amman Hindu temple. For centuries, pilgrims from both faiths have shared the same ferries to arrive at this small, sacred piece of land. The sight of the silver stupa of Nagadeepa glistening in the sun as your boat approaches the jetty is a moment of profound spiritual anticipation.
Theravada Heritage in the North
The temple complex features a beautiful stupa, an ancient Bodhi tree, and an image house with unique paintings. One of the most significant artifacts is a limestone inscription dating back to the reign of King Malatissa. The temple’s architecture is simple and elegant, reflecting the serene and humble atmosphere of the island community.
The Journey across the Sea
The primary way to reach Nagadeepa is by taking a local ferry from the Kurikadduwan (KKD) jetty. The 20-minute boat ride offers a fascinating glimpse into Northern island life, passing by the turquoise waters and traditional outrigger boats used by local fishermen. Crossing the sea to reach a place of worship adds a unique sense of pilgrimage to the entire experience.
