The Quintessential Experience of Keerimalai Sacred Water Spring
Keerimalai: The Healing Springs of the North
Keerimalai is an extraordinary natural phenomenon located at the very northern tip of Sri Lanka. It features an ancient fresh-water spring that surfaces just a few meters from the salty ocean waves. Legend tells of an Indian sage named Nagula Muni, whose 'mongoose face' was cured after bathing in these sacred waters, giving the location its name (Keeri meaning 'mongoose' and Malai meaning 'hill' or 'place').
A Geographical Wonder
The springs are part of a massive underground water system that flows through the limestone fractures of the Jaffna Peninsula. Despite its proximity to the sea, the water remains fresh and remarkably clear. Large stone ponds have been constructed to capture the water, allowing visitors to bathe in the cool, mineral-rich springs while looking out directly over the Indian Ocean.
Sacred Immersion
The site is home to the ancient Naguleswaram Kovil, one of the five sacred 'Iswarams' (temples) dedicated to Lord Shiva in Sri Lanka. For centuries, Hindus have visited Keerimalai to perform 'Aadi Amavasai' rituals, offering prayers for their ancestors. The combination of the sacred temple and the healing springs makes it an essential stop for anyone wanting to understand the deep spiritual roots of the North.
The Coastal Connection
The view from the Keerimalai bathing ponds is unmatched. The high stone walls provide privacy from the sea breeze, but the sound of the waves crashing just outside the walls creates a meditative atmosphere. It is a place of physical and spiritual rejuvenation, where the cool spring water provides a sharp and refreshing contrast to the humid Jaffna air.

While the site is open 24 hours, the best time to visit is in the early morning for a quiet bathing experience. As it is a sacred Hindu site, we ask all visitors to be respectful of the pilgrims performing their rituals. Towels and extra clothing are recommended if you plan to swim.
