The Quintessential Experience of Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya

Muthiyangana Viharaya: The Sacred Pearl of Uva

The **Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya** is not merely a temple; it is a repository of faith that has stood for over 2,300 years in the heart of Badulla. As one of the *Solosmasthana* (sixteen sacred places visited by Lord Buddha), its spiritual significance is immeasurable. Legend has it that the Buddha visited this site on his third visit to Sri Lanka, at the request of the local King Maniakkhika of Kelaniya and Indaka, the guardian deity of the Namunukula mountain range.

Ancient Royal Patronage

Originally sanctioned by King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BC, the temple has been expanded by successive monarchs, including King Jettha Tissa I and King Rajasinghe II. The main stupa, gleaming in white, is believed to enshrine the sacred hair and sweat of the Buddha, which solidified into pearl-like gems (hence the name 'Muthiyangana' - Pearl Place). The complex also features three sacred Bo trees and several image houses with exquisite Kandyan-era paintings.

A Spiritual Refuge with HBS Tours

At **HBS Tours**, we invite you to experience the serene atmosphere of this ancient temple. We often arrange visits during the early morning or evening when the sound of chanting and the white smoke of incense fill the air. It serves as a perfect spiritual grounding before you explore the more adventurous highland trails of Ella.

Suggested Activities

We recommend walking the length of the temple complex to appreciate the intricate dragon arches (*Makara Thorana*) at the entrances. Participating in a candle-lighting ceremony or making a simple flower offering is a deeply moving way to connect with the local culture. For history enthusiasts, the small on-site museum contains fascinating artifacts recovered from the temple grounds, including ancient clay lamps and inscriptions.
